Horace Walpole, who lived in neighbouring Twickenham facetiously wrote to a friend: "We begin to perceive the tower of Kew from Montpelier Road; in a fortnight you will be able to see it in Yorkshire". Soaring to a height of 163 feet, it is Kew's most familiar landmark.
