360° Panorama
Not far from the Pagoda is another oriental building, the Japanese Gateway, surmounting a low mound. It is a four-fifths sized replica of a sixteenth century ceremonial gate, the Chokushi-Mon in the Japanese city of Kyoto. After being shown at the Japan-British exhibition in London in 1910 it was transferred to Kew Gardens. Skilled Japanese craftsmen recently restored its superb wooden carvings, and at the same time a Japanese landscape designer complemented it with a sublime Japanese garden.
