Syon House, the London house of the Duke of Northumberland, can be seen from Syon Vista on the opposite bank of the Thames. On the eleven miles of the river between Hampton Court and Kew was a succession of the splendid homes of the nobility and gentry and of actors and writers such as David Garrick, Alexander Pope and Horace Walpole.
